Wine Shop | Clayridge Vineyards
Clayridge Vineyards is an exciting concept with its focus based around a dynamic hand-crafted hillside vineyard. The Pinot Noir vines that Mike and Paula Just hand planted on this steep north facing slope are situated on the highest such site in Marlborough. These vines, unlike most on the low flat plains of the region, have never been irrigated and as such have established a natural deep rooting system that will maximize the flavour potential of the low vigor clay-based soils on this unique site. This combination of altitude and attitude will allow the vineyard to exhibit the genuine potential of the terroir of this special slope.

Mike Just crafted numerous trophy winning wines as winemaker for Lawson's Dry Hills. Clayridge is an expression of everything Mike and his wife Paula have learnt over the years applied to their own hand tended site. Vibrant aromas of passion fruit and ripe melon balanced with a hint of citrus, rich tropical fruit on the palate and a long fresh finish.

Selected from a small parcel of very ripe fruit. 40% of the wine was fermented using wild yeasts, malolactic and lees stirring in seasoned French barriques. The remainder of the blend was cool fermented in stainless steel, then matured for 15 months in barrel. Rich ripe tropical fruits dominate the front palate with complex notes of fresh passionfruit, papaya and banana following through to a long, rich finish.

Hand picked from Mike and Paula Just's steep hillside blocks. Almost entirely handled by gravity to achieve a gentle and natural clarification in the barrel. Traditional hand plunging in open top fermenters was followed by 12 months maturation in new to four year old French barriques (25% new) to give a wine of rich ruby colour, with dark cherries balanced by subtle toasty oak notes on the palate.
